Capital Swing Dancers’ Presidents’ Day Convention is a highly attended and respected dance event which in 2024 held its 30th convention in Sacramento. It is hosted by the Capital Swing Dancers Club with significant assistance from hired event directors. Its longevity is largely attributable to its encouragement of all ages and skill levels of dancers from Juniors to Newcomers to Masters to routine dancers and for its ability to navigate the ever-changing Swing dance landscape. One of Capital’s greatest contributions to WCS in California is its continued support and encouragement of Juniors. It was one of the first conventions to host Juniors J&J contests, eventually adding Juniors Strictly Swing and routines for many years. It still offers contests and opportunities for Juniors, including “Juniors only” workshops by professional staff, hosted pizza parties, scholarships, etc. Capital works closely with local dance studios to bring over 30-40 juniors each year, making Capital the biggest Juniors division for many years. The Jack & Annie Scholarship Award was first given at Capital. Capital has encouraged and “older” experienced dancers by offering Newcomers and Masters J&J contests since its inception in 1993. To this day, it is one of the few events on the west coast offering Newcomer contests. Capital has been on the NASDE tour since its inception in 1995 and is the first event in the annual tour. It is also part of the Rising Star Tour to support and encourage newer routine dancers. There are many who remember Capital for its midnight breakfasts, Saturday dinners, and the awesome hospitality suite open to everyone. Using the knowledge that comes with 30 years of rich history, Capital continues to look for opportunities to build strong swing communities so that the dance continues to grow and thrive for many more years.
